Products & Services Word Search

I transformed a traditional, trainer-led course on products and services into an engaging, asynchronous learning experience using Articulate Storyline. Previously, new hires were overwhelmed with a 2-3 hour PowerPoint presentation and a printed packet detailing 80 products and services on their first day. To address this, I designed a word search game that not only made the information more digestible but also gave trainers valuable time back in their schedules.

Responsibilities: Intstructional Design, Graphic Design, eLearning Development

Tools Used: Articulate Storyline, Canva, Google Doc, Lucid Chart, Eleven Labs

Goals:

  • Reduce Information Overload: Present detailed information on 80 products and services in a more engaging and manageable way.

  • Increase Learner Engagement: Utilize gamification to make learning fun and interactive.

  • Save Trainer Time: Transition from a trainer-led to an asynchronous learning module.

The ADDIE Process

Analysis

During the analysis phase, I identified the key challenges:

  • New hires were experiencing information overload.

  • The existing method was not interactive and failed to engage learners.

  • Trainers spent a significant amount of time delivering the content.

I conducted interviews with trainers and new hires to understand their pain points and needs. I also reviewed the current materials to identify areas for improvement.

Design

I designed a word search game with three levels of increasing difficulty to replace the traditional presentation. Key design elements included:

  • Gamification: Incorporating game mechanics to make learning engaging and fun.

  • Progressive Learning: Structuring the game to increase in difficulty, ensuring that learners build on their knowledge as they progress.

  • Interactive Elements: Creating clickable words that open detailed information pages about each product or service with a AI VoiceOver reading the information to the learner.

  • Knowledge Checks: After each level, I included a matching quiz where learners must match the product or service with its definition. This reinforced their learning and ensured retention of the material before progressing to the next level.

Development

Using Articulate Storyline, I developed the word search game with the following features:

  • Level 1: Basic word search with common products and services.

  • Level 2: Intermediate word search with more challenging terms.

  • Level 3: Advanced word search with the most complex products and services.

I utilized Articulate Storyline's triggers, layers, motion paths, states, and voiceover capabilities to create these interactive elements, ensuring a seamless and engaging user experience.

Implementation

Before rolling out the new course, I conducted a pilot test with a small group of employees. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting increased engagement and a better understanding of the products and services.

Based on the feedback, I made minor adjustments to enhance clarity and navigation. The final version was then integrated into the LMS.

Evaluation

To evaluate the effectiveness of the new course, I used Kirkpatrick's Four-Level Training Evaluation Model:

  • Level 1: Reaction: Collected feedback from learners and trainers through surveys.

  • Level 2: Learning: Assessed knowledge retention through quizzes.

  • Level 3: Behavior: Observed on-the-job application of knowledge.

  • Level 4: Results: Measured overall satisfaction and efficiency.

Learning Theories Applied

Constructivist Learning Theory

I applied principles of constructivist learning by allowing learners to build their understanding through interaction and discovery. The game-based approach enabled learners to construct knowledge actively rather than passively absorbing information.

Cognitive Load Theory

To address information overload, I segmented the information into manageable chunks. The progressive difficulty levels and interactive pop-ups helped reduce cognitive load, making it easier for learners to process and retain information.

Gamification

By incorporating game elements such as levels, feedback, and interactivity, I enhanced learner motivation and engagement. The gamified approach also provided intrinsic rewards, encouraging learners to explore and learn at their own pace.

Conclusion

This project showcases my ability to blend creativity with instructional design principles to create effective and engaging learning experiences. Utilizing Articulate Storyline, I transformed a monotonous, information-heavy course into an interactive, learner-centered game that significantly improved knowledge retention and learner satisfaction.
